CHAPTER ELEVEN

Cara

I sense Tristan before I see him. In the same way, the barometric pressure changes in the atmosphere, and there’s no place to seek cover from the surge barreling straight toward you.

Nowhere to run.

So, you brace yourself to be swept away in the eye of it, fully aware it’ll be a hard landing at the edge of a cliff.

That’s exactly what my husband did to me three years ago. He swooped me right off my feet and into the eye of his storm.

There was nothing I could do, nor did I want to do, more than let him carry me away.

It wasn’t a perfect storm by any means of the word. It was damaging and destructive, with thunder and lightning and torrential downpours.

At times, like a blizzard with snow squalls that left me chilled to the bone.

We’ve been spinning up in all the hurt it created since.

Both of us are floating in the misery of the aftermath.

We’re wounded.

Dented.

Hearts frayed.

Banged up.

Injured.

But we’re easily repairable because we’ve been connected since our first glance.

A simple brush of our fingers lit a spark.

Setting us ablaze.

Living without the other has plunged us both into a dark, bottomless abyss.

And that’s where Tristan has lived most of his life.

He was thrown right into it. Yet, he’s still standing even with dark clouds following him everywhere for nearly two centuries while I feel like I’m right in the thick of it.

Drowning with the attempt to breathe.

But then, I thought of the man I know. The one who sacrificed in the most brutal ways, and what could have happened if he didn’t commit those acts.

There are all kinds of reasons why he’s a good man. The man I believe his mother is proud of. He does so much for the shelter without any questions asked. He drops everything he’s doing when I need something done. He found protection for a few women once they went out into the world after completing our program just because I was fearful their exes would track them down. Those women were so severely beaten when they came to the shelter; it’s a miracle their hearts were still beating.

He donates to charities.

He cares about his staff, his people, and his brother.

And even though I told myself it was my decision to make, I’ve never been more appreciative of my family in my entire life because they opened my eyes.

I can’t turn my back on Tristan. I can’t leave him when he needs me.

When I need him.

When we are the balm to one another’s souls.

Last night, I decided to sleep in the bedroom as this would be where we’d end up anyway. The second my head hit the pillow, I tossed and turned while so many memories of Tristan and me flashed through my mind, rushing to the surface, and I knew there would be no changing my life’s destination.

I was meant to be his, and him mine.

I looked beyond my anger and told myself forgiving is part of loving someone. It’s not always
